Botox for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

If you are sick of changing your shirt halfway through the day, or afraid to lift your arms because you know you'll have giant sweat stains, you might have a condition known as hyperhidrosis (aka excessive sweating).

If you think you have hyperhidrosis, don't sweat it (pun- intended)! There is a treatment option that you may or may not have considered, and it works extremely well… Botox!

Continue Reading to learn more about Botox for excessive sweating!

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating of the underarms, hands or feet caused by overactive sweat glands just beneath the skin. People with a mild form of hyperhidrosis may experience episodes of sweating when they are nervous or anxious, while people with the most severe forms may sweat constantly throughout the day! It can be an embarrassing problem to have, and quite costly if you think about having to change (and dry clean) several shirts every single day.

How does Botox help sweating?

Botox works by blocking the chemical signals from nerves that stimulate the overactive sweat glands. When the chemical signals stop, the amount of sweat these glands produce can be drastically reduced.

Is it bad to not sweat?

No. Because Botox blocks the chemical signals in the treated area only, you dont have to worry about sweat building up or going to another part of your body. The rest of your body still makes sweat like normal because the Botox only works in the areas that are treated.

How long does it take before it starts working?

Botox for sweating takes about 2 weeks to start working. Sometimes, even after the 2 weeks you may still feel like you are sweating too much. If this happens, you should consider getting a touch up injection. Sometimes putting a little more Botox in the area can change your result from OK to Great!

How long does it last?

Botox for sweating can last up to 9 months, which is much longer than Botox for frown lines and crows feet (which usually lasts about 4-6 months). For most people, Botox for sweating is a once-a-year procedure.

Does it hurt?

No… you'll barely feel a thing. In our office, we routinely use numbing cream under the arms to take away most of the discomfort. You may feel one or two very small pinches at the beginning of the procedure, but it's actually a very easy and comfortable treatment… as long as it's being done by someone who knows how to make you comfortable

Does it work for everyone?

Yes, Botox will reduce perspiration in everyone (men and women), and in most cases you can expect a 70-90% decrease in sweating. Botox doesn't stop sweating completely, but for most people it leads to a very noticeable improvement!
